COLLEGE OF TEACHER EDUCATION

Overview

The history of the Teacher Education program at ASU can be traced as early as 1975 when the BS in Agriculture degree offered Agricultural Education as one of its areas of specialization. To strengthen the program’s educational foundation, the Master of Arts in Teaching Elementary Agriculture (MATEA) and Master of Science in Agriculture Education (MS Ag. Ed.)were offered in then Aklan Agricultural College (AAC), now ASU.

The University (then AAC) decided to offer the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) program with specialization in Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) under the Higher Education Services Unit. This decision was effected upon the authority granted by DECS Order No. 115, series of 1987 effective SY 1987-88.

With the integration of four (4) public Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Aklan to the Aklan State College of Agriculture in 1999, by virtue of RA 7722, RA 8292 and RA 8745, the Teacher Education program of the University has expanded its coverage and strengthened its identity.

The Aklan National College of Fisheries (then Aklan National School of Fisheries until June 1964), now ASU-School of Fishery and Marine Sciences, New Washington Campus had as its flagship program the Bachelor of Science in Fishery Education with specialization in Fish Processing, Aquaculture, Marine Fisheries, and Food Technology, and minors in Mathematics and Filipino. On April 15, 1996, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) granted ANCF the authority to offer the Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEEd) and Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd)through CHED Order No. 66, series of 1996, effective school year 1996-97.

At the Roxas Memorial College of Arts and Trades (RMCAT), now ASU-School of Industrial Technology, Kalibo Campus, Teacher Education was coursed through the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education (BSIE) program, which was first offered for enrolment in 1976, with expertise in Automotive, Cosmetology, Civil Technology, Drafting Technology, Electrical Technology, Electronics Technology, Machine Shop Technology, Industrial Arts, Food Technology, Home Economics, Furniture and Cabinet Making, Garments and Textile Technology, and Technology and Home Economics.

With the implementation of the Revised Basic Education Curriculum (RBEC), the BSIE course needs to be gradually phased out to give way to the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd), major in Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) starting SY 2006-2007.

It was in 1995 that the Western Aklan Polytechnic College (then Ibajay National Agricultural and Industrial School), now ASU-School of Rural Resource Development and Management, Ibajay Campus, opened its door to the education degree programs – the BSEd and the BEEd with three specializations – English, Filipino and Mathematics.

In the ASU-Teacher Education Center, Makato Campus (then the Northern Panay Teachers College). The Bachelor of Secondary Education, with majors in Technology and Home Economics, and Physical Education was first offered during SY 1996-97. Presently, under the College of Teacher Education, it offers the BSEd curriculum with specialization in Mathematics, English, Filipino and TLE; the BEEd program; the Certificate in Teaching course; and the Master of Arts in Education, major in Educational Management.

The Higher Education Services branched out in 2001 to become CAFES, SVM, SIT, SFMS, SRRDM, and SAS, where the BSEd course was nurtured as the prime program. For five (5) years, the Teacher Education program emerged as the most important factor in the survival of SAS. On May 14, 2006, the Board of Regents  through BOR Resolution No. 21-19, series of 2006, granted the independence of the Teacher Education program from the folds of the School of Arts and Sciences, and created a new college to be known as the College of Teacher Education or CTE, with the four (4) T’s mission – “Training Tomorrow’s Teachers Today!”
